Patriarchy in Ancient Greek Societies free essay sample

The Myth of Psyche and Eros was told from one generation to the next, and in these six paragraphs, I will tell you about this myth. The rising action starts with a stunningly beautiful girl,  Psyche, is born after two older sisters. People throughout the land worship her beauty so deeply that they forget about the goddess  Aphrodite. Aphrodite becomes angry that her temples are falling to ruin, so she plots to ruin Psyche. She instructs her son, Eros, to pierce the girl with an arrow and make sure that no one loves her EVER! But when Cupid sees Psyche in her radiant glory, he shoots himself with the arrow instead. [pic] The climax of the story occurs as; Psyche and her family become worried that she will never find a husband, for although men admire her beauty, they always seem content to marry someone else. Psyches father heads to the oracle to seek help from the gods. They instruct her to go to the top of a hill, where she will marry. Psyche bravely follows the instructions and falls asleep on the hill. When she wakes up, she discovers a stunning mansion. Going inside, she relaxes and enjoys fine food and luxurious treatment. At night, in the dark, she meets and falls in love with her husband. The falling action beings with Psyche. As she lives happily with him, never seeing him, until one day she tells him that she is lonely; she begs to see her sisters. Her husband replies that it would be fine to do so. When they visit, they become extremely jealous of Psyches beautiful mansion and lush quarters. They deduce that Psyche has never seen her husband, and they convince her that she must sneak a look. Confused and conflicted, Psyche turns on a lamp one night as her husband lies next to her. When she sees the beautiful Eros asleep on her bed, she weeps for her lack of faith. Eros awakens because a drop of oil falls onto him, and flees because Love cannot live where there is no trust. Eros returns to his mother, Aphrodite, who again decides to enact revenge on the beautiful girl. This myth’s resolution occurs when Pysche journeys all over the land to find Eros. She decides to go to Aphrodite herself in a plea for love and forgiveness, and when she finally sees Aphrodite, the great goddess laughs aloud. Aphrodite shows her a heap of seeds and tells her that she must sort them all in one nights time if she wants to see Eros again. This task is impossible for one person alone, but ants help Psyche and sort the seeds for her, because psyche is a friend of their friend. Shocked, Aphrodite then orders Psyche to retrieve Golden Fleece from the sheep in the valley below. A reed comes and gives her a hint. Instead of collecting the fleece from the sheep, she suggests that she collect the golden pieces of fleece from the thorny briar that catches it. Psyche follows these instructions and returns a sizable quantity to Aphrodite. Aphrodite still does not give in. She challenges Psyche to go into the underworld and have  Persephone  put some of her beauty in a box. Miraculously, Psyche succeeds. On her way toward giving the box to Aphrodite, she becomes curious, opens the box, and instantly falls asleep. Meanwhile, Eros looks for Psyche and finds her sleeping. He awakens her, puts the sleeping spell back in the box, and takes her to  Zeus  to request her immortality. Zeus grants the request and makes Psyche an immortal goddess. She and Eros are married. Aphrodite now supports the marriage because her son has married a goddess—and because Psyche will no longer distract the men on earth from Aphrodite. In These six paragraphs, I told you about the myth of Psyche and Eros. How about now, you go and tell someone about this myth, and keep this myth from dying. Patriarchy In this myth: As I read his myth to myself, I began to understand what it was saying more, and more, and I realized that one form of patriarchy in this myth Is that; The men can just choose a woman, and she has to be his wife. Also, if the gods choose for you, you cannot say no. Whatever the â€Å"Oracle† ( where to seek gods for help ) says, it must be done.

Romance in the Workplace essays

Romance in the Workplace essays Whats love got to do with it? Quite a lot, actually. To answer Tina Turners proverbial question, this section of the research paper deals with romance and how it affects ones behavior in the workplace. First, the term "romantic relationship" suggests that we will be examining relationships between two people in which some element of sexuality or physical intimacy exists. In so doing, we note the difference between perceived romantic relationships (i.e., relationships that non-participants believe have a sexual component) and actual romantic relationships (i.e., relationships between participants that actually have a sexual component). The one may lead to the other, but does not necessarily imply the other. Coworkers who are romantically involved may successfully keep that aspect of their relationship secret from others, and/or others may suspect that two people are romantically involved when in fact they are not. Second, the term "romantic relationship" suggests that the relationship is a welcome one for both partners. If the relationship is welcomed by one partner but not the other, it is likely to constitute sexual harassment rather than what we would consider a romantic relationship because one party may be forcing his or her will on the other. Some observers believe that virtually all romantic relationships in organizational settings constitute sexual harassment because they arise more for reasons of men's domination and control of women than for reasons of mutual sexual interest (e.g., MacKinnon, 1979; Tancred-Sheriff, 1989). We as a group do not subscribe to this view. However, we acknowledge that a romantic relationship may become sexual harassment when one partner no longer welcomes the sexual component of the relationship. Third, our reference to romantic relationships "in organizational settings" suggests that we will be examining romantic relationships between two members of the same organization or ...

Environmental Analysis Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Environmental Analysis - Assignment Example It seems all of these are basic and generic strategies used by Toyota which is found from the theory of competitive advantage by Porter (1980). This only proves that Porter’s theory of competitive advantage still applies until today. Due to this competitive move that Toyota is trying to achieve, the company was able to cut cost while ensuring customers about its cutting-edge technology. With this move, Toyota will be able to cut cost for the price of its offerings but it is still to ensure customers with its standard quality products. Toyota has become the leading car manufacturer and producer in the world because of its quality line of offerings and cutting-edge technology. This remarkably was able to gain social acceptance. This is due to the fact that the society is eager to accept something new and in line with the age of technological revolution. However, the real threat behind this smooth social acceptance for the products manufactured by Toyota is actually on the fact t hat they are assets of the company. Toyota’s products are certainly its assets. However, recent world-wide recalls of products produced by Toyota have triggered social concerns. This particularly includes quality and safety issues. It was noted that in the year 2009, Toyota paid $10 million to four families in the UK who were killed from a runaway Lexus car due to faulty design (BBC News, 2010). Within 12 months up to November 2010, there were reported 229 products recalled in the UK due to health and safety issue, production and design flaw and other related quality issues which part of them were car products (BBC News, 2011). This only shows that the market in the UK is very determined to stand on the quality of offerings which might be difficult for Toyota to get through after it had suffered from issues on quality related matters. Considering that Toyota’s products are its assets in obtaining its target revenue, the incidence of quality problem has substantially tr iggered social concerns among buyers. This is due to the fact that in the UK alone, quality is tantamount to safety and value for the money invested on certain products. This can be clearly observed how the government had responded aggressively to product recalls as initiated by Toyota Motors. The problems affecting Toyota are not only focused on social issues but they also include highly political concerns. With the increasing concern on cutting-edge technology, government has brought forward the necessity to conduct thorough investigations on product quality and implementation of efficient technology. It is therefore clear in here that there is a strong link between political and technological concerns. On the part of Toyota Motors, there is a strong downside of technological exploration. However, on the part of the law, Toyota Corporation still has to face any noted violations as believed by the law to be beyond reasonably doubted. For the law, this is just to ensure social safet y and corporate responsibility. Thus, Toyota was fined particularly in the US for about $16.4 million, the highest so far in history due to legacy issue on car recalls in line with quality issues (BBC News, 2010). Another important aspect that needs to be understood is in line with environmental concerns. The emission of green house gases leads to global concern about the environment. In other countries for instance,

Reaction Journal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Reaction Journal - Essay Example The arrest of Eugene V. Debs is reminiscent of authoritarian governments which Americans now criticize in other global regimes, such as China. However, this had a positive consequence: the formation of the American Civil Liberties Union. ‘The Roaring Twenties’ appears to be a misnomer! Economic prosperity was concentrated in big business, but did not extend to the agricultural sector or rural area. Public support for the Ku Klux Klan, the Emergency Quota Act of 1921, the National Origins Act of 1924, lynching, and the banning of interracial marriages indicated an upsurge in racism. Christian fundamentalism raised its head. Perhaps it assumed a connotation of general well-being, because it was sandwiched between the World War 1 and the Great Depression. Ironically, the New Deal failed to satisfy the privileged class (who resented the higher taxes imposed on them), critics in the Democratic Party (Huey P. Long declared that it failed to do enough for the poor), or the Republican opposition (Senator Taft condemned it for its socialist stance, deficit spending and its attack on private enterprise). The AAA’s destruction of ‘surplus’ agricultural production (during a period of acute food scarcity!) and discrimination against blacks, debase the New Deal.3 President Roosevelt’s ‘Four Freedoms’ – freedom of speech and worship, and freedom from want and fear, was accepted American ideology, but contradicted and undermined by racism. It is tragic to read Foner’s account of the government â€Å"bending over backward to accommodate German-Americans and Italian-Americans in the war effort† but â€Å"viewing every person of Japanese ethnicity as a potential spy†4. The meaning of ‘freedom’ was controversial during the 1950’s. The Cold War identified freedom with anti-communism: racially segregationist South Africa was part of the ‘Free World’ merely because

Emotion Appeal Essay Example for Free

Emotion Appeal Essay The fallacy of ad hominem is an attack against the person of the one asserting a claim. The assumption made is that, as a consequence of the attack against the person, the claim made by such person is also false. 2. Ad hominem tu quoque This fallacy is possible to occur when a person made two inconsistent statements or a statement inconsistent with a prior action. It is assumed the claim later made is false because of the inconsistency without considering which or whether one of the two statements or actions made is really true. 3. Appeal to consequences of a belief Appeal to consequences of a belief makes the truth or falsity of a claim be based on the consequences that may occur if its truth or falsity is accepted. In this fallacy, if a claim will result to good consequences, it must be true and vice versa. 4. Appeal to authority Appeal to authority exists when a claim is asserted to be true based on the fact that it was made by an authority, who is in fact not an authority on that subject or is not qualified to make such claim. If the person to whom the claim is attributed is actually an authority or an expert, then there is no fallacy. 5. Appeal to emotion Appeal to emotion is the act of stirring one’s emotion to influence a person to accept that a claim is true. 6. Begging the question Begging the question is properly called as reasoning in circles. It involves a premise that contains an assumption that the conclusion is true, thus giving rise to a situation wherein the premise is used to support the truth of the conclusion while the conclusion is used to support the truth of the premise. 7. Confusing cause and effect This fallacy occurs when a person assumes one event to be the cause of another event just because these two events usually occur regularly together, when there may in fact be no justification or proof establishing such causal relation other than the fact that they often occur together. 8. Middle ground The fallacy assumes a position to be true just because it lies in the middle of the two extremes. 9. Red Herring This fallacy is used to direct the attention of the other person away of the main topic of the argument. The argument is diverted from the main issue to another issue which is not relevant, but s introduced under the guise of being relevant to the main issue. 10. Slippery slope This fallacy argues that one event will follow another event without giving a justification why. This usually occurs when the causation is too remote, such as when several other steps, which may not be inevitable, will have to follow before such claimed consequence may arise. 11. Straw man This fallacy occurs when a person attacks a distorted position of another person, as a consequence of which it is assumed that the real or original position is also falsified. 12. Who is to say? In this fallacy, a person asks the question â€Å"who is to say† or other similar questions, but already has a preconceived answer that no one is to say. As a consequence of this, it is accepted that the issue cannot be decided because no one is capable or qualified to decide on it.

Comparing Gun Control Laws in Kentucky, USA and Germany Essay -- Compa

â€Å"Our love is to possess arms, though they hope never to have occasion for them.† Since this quote that Thomas Jefferson once said, guns and their capabilities have changed history throughout the world and have affected all most everyone living in today’s society. Gun control and gun polices have created an upheaval among a growing amount of nations. With increasing gun rate crime and the ease of accessibility to obtain firearms in some places in the world, states inside America and countries around the world have altered its stance on gun control and their laws. From strong gun control and strict trafficking in Germany, too little to very light restrictions and laws on firearms in Kentucky, guns, either way, are a controversial issue that today’s society must face. The state of Kentucky is known around the United States to have laws that allow people to own, operate, and carry different firearms across the state. One of these lenient laws is of private sellers, who of any type of firearms, are not required to have background checks to buyers. This law is much different across the United States as almost all other states require either getting a background check or at least registering the gun’s that are bought. Another lenient law that the state of Kentucky has is that the regulation of unsafe and or assault weapons with large ammunition magazines is not required. This makes accessibility to more dangerous weapons easier for anyone interested in purchasing any type of firearm across the state. Along with its lenient laws, the state of Kentucky also ranks fourth out of the fifty states in crimes involving gun’s that were originally bought in the state, and twelfth out of the fifty states in homicide deaths with guns (Summary ... ... regarding gun regulation and gun control offer more protection than where gun laws would be more lenient. Addressing the issue would be to limit more types of guns, require background checks, and have more laws on trafficking firearms. With rapidly changing times and more innovations in new firearms being put into the market every day, nations around the world have to reconsider their own laws to protect their citizens from the dangers of guns. Being Fat a Big Issue

Being Fat a Big Issue Daniel Gutierrez English 1430, Fall 2010, Section 02 Professor A. Hepner October 14th, 2010 Daniel Gutierrez A. Hepner ENG 1300-01 October 14th, 2010 Being Fat a Big Issue Being fat is one of the biggest issues lately. Our society has created a stereotype of how people should look and it is not exactly a fat boy/girl. People who are fat have suffered every day for how they look and many times our society ignores fat people’s feelings.Obese people have been suffering depression and discrimination for being fat, even though sometimes it is a disease or compulsive eating (eating disorder) that makes them fat, there are also some irresponsible cases of eating unhealthily and it not working out. Obese people today tend to be discriminated for being fat in our society. Overweight people are not different to us; they are people like you and me, for that reason we should not judge them. They are part of our society and they deserve respect and understanding. Ms.C laudia Gomez said, â€Å"It is hard for us when I take the bus and everybody looking us like if we are different or if we are funny, they don’t know how painful it is. † In addition, there are some studies to show that depression can be responsible for overweight especially in women (Overweight and Depression). Moreover, some obese people have eating disorder like compulsive overeating. Compulsive overeating is an addiction to food in big quantities. People suffering compulsive overeating used to eat to hide their emotions, to avoid what they feel inside or their life problems. As Susie Orbach said in her essay, Fat as a Feminist Issue, â€Å"Women suffering from the problem of compulsive eating endure double anguish: feeling out of step with the rest of society, and believing that it is all their own fault†¦. (201)† Overweight people have a disease which means people having extra body weight from muscle, bone and fat (What are Overweight and Obesity). There are some options to lose weight such as: surgery, diets by a nutritionist, exercise and some medicines. According to Medline Plus one of the common options for very obese people is the Gastric by Pass Surgery. After this surgery the patients will not be capable of eating like they ate before. This is an alternative to lose weight faster but also the patients have to follow a diet and do exercise (Gastric Bypass Surgery). Furthermore, obese people have not been practicing healthy habits. The most common unhealthy habits among overweight people are: they do not do exercise, they eat too frequently, usually eat more than one time at the same meal, they stay away from lightest activities (like use the stairs or walk a little), and they eat when they are not truly hungry (Frisch).Likewise, overweight people might be more responsible. Everybody knows what we can do or what we can’t. If I know that I’m gaining weight, I also know that I have to take care of what I eat and do exercise. But many obese people know that they are fat and they still eat unhealthy food and also they do not do exercise. I think this is happening because we like to blame the circumstances (depression, divorce, childhood, etc). But at the same time they also know that being overweight may not be their fault but they are responsible to remain so, because what we do is our choice.Even though there are many advertisements that encourage us to eat unhealthy, nobody is forcing us to eat that food. Also you are the only one who can make the simple decision of taking the elevator or go up stairs. Being obese or overweight is an irresponsible act that makes people sick and this affects everybody because this is a public health problem that should not be. In his essay, What You Eat Is Your Business, Radley Balko maintains that, â€Å"the best way to alleviate the obesity â€Å"public health† crisis is to remove obesity from the realm of public health (157). As he said, here some p eople would probably say that people should be responsible with their own health because we are the only ones who make the choice of living healthy or not. On the other hand, some fat people are proud of how they are. Mr. Alvarado who is weighting around 310 pounds describes himself as a big man and he said, â€Å"I don’t feel bad because I’m fat, I am happy how I am, a big man. I’m comfortable with my weight, I am healthy and I don’t want to change because the society says that people should be thin. In my opinion, over the years and following the bad habits that he has, I am not sure if he is going to be healthy. He maybe is proud of how he is but if he does not start to eat healthy and do exercise, he is going to see the consequences in a few years. In conclusion, being obese or overweight is an issue but it is also a disease. Although, it is unhealthy and unsightly, the hardest is some of them feel like they cannot fit in our society. In my opinion, we should not judge them; we should help them to make the correct decision to have a healthy life and also we have to change the stereotype that the society has showed us.Also, I used to think all obese people were unhappy to be fat. But my recent researches show me that some obese people simply do not care what people say about them and they are happy how they are.
